One Year and Beyond - Eating out tips!

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Happy Thursday.
I am back linking up again with the One Year and Beyond Toddler Series!

This weeks topic is:
Tricks for eating out with your toddler

This is something my husband and I are just now getting used to.
We probably ate out one time during Nicks first year of life.  We had a horrible experience so we didn't do it again, ha!

By no means do I consider myself a pro at this but here are a few things that always help us:

1)  Choose a kid friendly restaurant:
We always go to places that are loud, have entertainment or have an outside eating area.  We love places that have someone playing live music.  We love outside eating areas because if Nicklas does decide to have a 'moment' its not as disruptive to others.

2) Come Prepared:
I always 'overpack' when we are going out.  I always bring snacks (just in case the food takes a while), toys, colors, and the iphone.  The youtube and disneyjr apps have been life savers!

3) Pick a good time to go:
If Nicklas has not had a good nap or is just in a mood we never go out to eat.  In my opinion, there is no point in pushing Nicklas when I know its not going to end well.  This, at times, drives my husband crazy but if I am going to be paying for a meal, I want to enjoy it!!

4) Reward your child:
Some parents think this is wrong, which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  In my house, if your good you get a reward.  If your bad you get time out!  If Nicklas has been really good during dinner we will let him play on the playground (the restaurant we frequent most often has a playground right next door) or we will go get ice cream.

I hope some of these tips help.  What do you do to make eating out easier?!  I am always looking for new ideas!!

  3. We went out to eat all the time when Mia was a newborn and we didn't understand why people dreaded eating out with their kids... Mia just slept the whole time. THEN she got big enough that she stopped sleeping, THEN she became mobile... and it is a whole lot harder than it used to be, ha ha!
    LOVE your tips!!

  4. Great tips. It definitely can be hit or miss with toddlers in restaurants. Drew was actually really good but I'm scared to take both Drew and Ady now!
