One Year and Beyond

This weeks One Year and Beyond topic is "Weaning from breastfeeding or from formula to cow's milk."

When Nicklas was first born we tried breastfeeding.  Didn't work for us due to Nicklas being allergic to my breast milk.  We then tried several different types of formula.  We finally found Similacs Soy formula and found that is what worked best for Nicklas due to his allergies to milk.

I was terrified of switching Nicklas to cow's milk because of ALL the problems we had with the different types of formula and his allergies.

We decided to switch him to cow's milk when he turned a year old.  I also decided to get rid of the bottle at this time too.  My thoughts were since I am giving him something totally new I didn't want him to feel like I was 'tricking' him by putting it in his bottle.

I did 'assume the position' that we normally used when feeding him his bottle.  This picture is the first time I gave him milk... it is also the last time I ever held him to give him his milk.  Very bittersweet.

Nicklas did wonderful.  I was so thankful.  We started giving him milk 3 times a day, just like he took his bottle.  We now only do milk twice a day with snacks.  I do not give Nicklas juice.  He only gets milk and water so its what he gets most of his nutrients from.

Now its time to get rid of the sippy cup!!
Its always something... right?!?!

I know this is a anti climactic post bout weaning but it also shows that it can be easy!!

Good luck!

  1. We had a really easy transition too. And always put the milk in a sippy cup. Thanks for linking up with us and sharing your story. I'm jealous that you have a photo of the last time you fed him...I was just lamenting over the fact that it all happened so quickly I didn't even realize that I'd just given him his very last bottle. Le sigh. :)

    1. Hey Sara! Love this link up, this was such a great idea! Love getting advice and feedback! I didn't realize this photo was the last until I was writing this blog. So thankful I was blogging at the time and trying to get pictures of everything! Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend! :)

  2. Aw, how bittersweet that you have a picture of the last time! Thanks for sharing your story! :)

  3. What a great moment captured! Only one of my babies took a bottle, so we also went with the sippy for milk. I agree, it doesn't always have to be hard. And sometimes kids decide to wean themselves....which is amazing!

  4. Yay! How nice that it was so easy!! I don't think Mia will have a hard time saying goodbye to the sippy.... I think I'M going to have a hard time being patient with the spills that will come with a cup, ha ha! But it's time to start teaching her how to drink from a cup!

So what reactions did he have to let you know that he was allergic to your milk? That is so scary!

    1. Hi Courtney! Thanks for stopping by! Yes we started the straw cups this weekend... so far, so good!! Good luck with the cup process! Nicklas would spit up.. A LOT with my milk. I know spit up is normal but this was like Exorcist spit up. He would also cry for about 4 hours EVERY NIGHT. He did the same thing with regular formula and sensitive tummy formula. Once we tried Soy formula he was a different child. It was very scary because we didn't know what was wrong but thankful for my mom because she said I was the same way!
