One Year and Beyond Toddler Link Up

Thursday, May 8, 2014

I am so excited about this blog link up!
I could definitely use advice in all areas of raising a toddler.

This weeks topic is Taming the toddle temper tantrums.
Here is my story on this:

One night I put my sweet little BABY to bed.  We had had a wonderful day together and I couldn't wait to wake up and do it all over again.  Well this morning when we woke up I sat Nicklas down so that I could get his breakfast ready and my sweet little baby threw himself to the ground and started crying.  There was nothing wrong with him that I could see and later in the day I told my mom what had happened... she said "Looks like you have a toddler honey!"

For about a week this continued 3 or 4 times a day.  My husband and I tried to figure out the best thing to do.  We have finally decided there are two things that work best at our house. One is to completely ignore him.  I was talking to a friend at work about this and she reminded me of a video that was on America Funniest Videos.  It shows a mom taping her little boy having a complete meltdown.  She would leave the room, he would quit crying, stand up, look for her, and once her saw her he would throw himself on the ground again!  I figure, if he is no danger... IGNORE HIM!  The second thing we have started is time out.  If things get out of control and he begins to hit or throw things we put him in time out.

Here is our time out chair.  It is located in a spot that we can still see and hear our child but he is out of the center of attention.  We do one second per year he is old.  We haven't done it many times but the times we have he comes back into the room a different child!

I am also a HUGE fan of Jo Frost!  I love watching re runs of her show Super Nanny!
Her new book has totally opened my eyes to the kind of mom I want to be!

I am very excited about reading how everyone else handles tantrums!!  I am no SUPER MOM so all the advice I can get I will take!

  3. We have a time out chair just like that. Only a girlie one ;)

It's funny how sometimes you go to bed with a baby & then you wake up with the reality of a toddler lol. I love nanny books. I'm gonna have to check this one out :)

  5. No way!! What a funny video! But seriously? Kids, man! They are too smart! I am all for the ignoring thing when Mia throws a seemingly meaningless fit.
We need to get Mia a time out chair! I think she's getting close to the point where she will understand what it is and that she wants to avoid it :) Hopefully?

  6. I am with you on the "ignore them" That is how we have dealt with all the tantrums. We always try and confront them calmly and talk them down, but ultimately we just let them battle it out. They seem to stop a whole lot faster that way!
